On the same day an intruderat their San Francisco home early Friday morning, federal officials announced a man pleaded guilty to threatening to kill Bay Area congressman Eric Swalwell, and issued a broader warning about politically motivated violence in advance of Election Day.
“You can’t just say, ‘we feel badly about the violence, we condemn it,'” he said. “Condemn what produces the violence, and this talk produces the violence.” “These threats of violence endanger our public officials and thwart common decency, which is why this Office will continue to prosecute crimes like those committed by Joshua Hall,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, in a statement.“MAGA political violence is at peak level in America,” he wrote. “Somebody is going to get killed.”
The Department of Homeland Security, FBI, National Counterterrorism Center and U.S. Capitol Police sent the joint communication, according to CBS News. The attack on Paul Pelosi appears to be the latest high-profile act of political violence, following the shooting and wounding of Democratic Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in 2011 at a speaking event and of House Republican Whip Steve Scalise in 2017 at a baseball field. Threats, harassment and vandalism have extended far beyond national figures, including to school board members and public health officials during the height of the pandemic and after the 2020 presidential race.
