Starting in 2023, Waukegan schools will allow parents to volunteer in place of paying student registration fees.
A number of committees were formed to review policies. Some are already implemented, others will be in place in the future and yet more are still under discussion. Plascencia said the committee reviewing fees took an innovative approach to the satisfaction of payment.
A large percentage of registration fees are regularly waived and the collection rate is low. For the 2018-2019 school year before there was any impact from the coronavirus pandemic, just over $1.8 million in fees were assessed, slightly over $1.2 million waived and $67,126.35 were collected, according to district records.
Board President Brandon Ewing said before the vote 69% of the district’s students fall below the poverty line, and waiving fees is “the right thing to do.” Board member Jeff McBride said retired Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles is now part of Harris & Associates. He is looking forward to the expertise Walles will bring.
