Started in 1990 to honor celebrities from Waukegan, Ty Rohrer, the Waukegan Park District’s manager of cultural arts and a local historian, said the first person honored on the Walk of Stars was world-renowned author Ray Bradbury.

“This is meant to be an art installation,” Waukegan landscape architect Tim Helke, who crafted the planting design of both areas, said. “It complements the art.”Members of the Waukegan Garden Club were installing plants at the Walk of Stars, and Helke did the same with a group of volunteers Saturday in Waukegan creating foliage to enhance the area.“It needs a lot of love and nurturing,” Waukegan Garden Club president Colleen Hintz said. “It needs some serious attention.

“These are all native plants or pollinators,” Hintz said. “It’s good for the environment. It’s just not being pretty. This will create a habitat for birds, butterflies and caterpillars. This will provide food for them. Bees will pollinate the plants.” “This is an art instillation,” Hintz said. “These plantings are part of the environmental story. This will help people appreciate what we have here. This puts art where people are.”
