Staffers roughed up, student punched after suspects force way into Waukegan middle school, authorities say

Prosecutors said a teacher tried to prevent the pair from gaining entry, but they were able to force their way in. Terry’s friend choked and threw to the ground another teacher who also was trying to prevent them from entering, officials said. She and the man then left in a vehicle after school employees subdued them and removed them from the school. Officials reported a license plate number to Waukegan police, who located the vehicle outside a residence and took Terry into custody.

“As a school community we expect our Lewis students to behave themselves in a respectful and responsible manner,” they wrote. “Needless to say, we expect the same from our visiting adults as well.” Waukegan School District 60 spokesperson Nick Alatzakis said the entrance where the altercation happened is a side door used by students, and staffed by school employees. Staff responded quickly to confront the pair and escort them out of the school, he said.

Injured staff members were examined at an urgent care facility, but did not suffer injuries that required hospitalization, Alatzakis said.Terry works for a security company and lives with her sister, helping to look after her sister’s three children, her attorney said. The judge rejected the attorney’s request for a recognizance bond, and ordered Terry to not be on the grounds of any school district property should she post bond.

Authorities said Terry is not alleged to have struck a school official, but was charged with aggravated battery to a school employee under laws that make her accountable for the actions of accomplices in the alleged commission of crimes.
