An art exhibit, a virtual history tour, a first-time event sponsored by the Waukegan Park District, and more are all ways people around Waukegan and Lake County are celebrating Women’s History Month in March.
Deanna Cruz, the executive and creative director of the Dandelion Gallery, talks about her contribution to the Women’s History Month exhibit at the Jack Benny Center.
Angela Marcum, the Park District’s cultural arts specialist, said she attended an event on International Women’s Day at a college in Indiana a few years ago, was inspired by it and decided to start a celebration in Waukegan this year. Started in 1911 by organizers in Europe as well as the United States and adopted by the United Nations in 1975, Soybel said International Women’s Day was in part about the crusade to get women the right to vote as well as better working conditions. It has grown to become more.
“It’s about feminism and being a woman,” Cruz said. “It highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. The art shows historical women and feminism.” “It’s about the movement and resurrection. It shows what women have overcome,” Cruz said of the chastity belt piece. “These are historical women in the in the history of feminism,” she added about the display by the front door. “They all demonstrate power.”To the right of the display greeting people walking through the front door is what Cruz said is the hall of queens depicting women from ancient Egyptian monarchs to Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.
