Millions have been infected and many have died of the virus. Many others have survived – but not without emotional scars which still affect their daily lives.
After having recovered at the end of July year, the mother of one again found herself at the mercy of the virus. “I know it might sound like I’m being dramatic, but I was really very frightened. I was so sick that I couldn’t even lie down or do anything else, for that matter, because it felt as if my entire body was bundled up in my chest. The only thought I had was whether I was going to die.As if things could not get any worse, on August 9, Mabaleka lost her 48-year-old father to the virus, after he and Mabaleka’s mother both tested positive for the virus.
“The first time I got the virus was in December 2020,” she said. “It started as simple, flu-like symptoms. Then I developed a very sore throat, night chills and night sweats.“However, I showed no signs of recovery after a week of taking the medication and that was when I realised that I was seriously ill. Something big was happening to me.”
