WSU's 'Queer Pole Fit' classes aim to challenge the stigma around pole dancing and offer an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.
Washington State University (WSU) is offering free 'Queer Pole Fit' classes with the aim of challenging the stigma surrounding pole dancing and providing an inclusive 'safe space' for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ and their allies. These free classes, held every Friday, do not require registration.
According to a description on the university's website, they are 'open to all who identify as LGBTQ+ and allies!' The class description further states, 'Queer Pole Fit is meant to create a community and environment that helps folks feel safe and disrupt stereotypical ideas about pole dancing. Taught by our queer pole instructors, come as you are, and enjoy this fun and challenging format.' Laura Yasinitsky, the University Recreation fitness coordinator, explained to The Daily Evergreen, the university's news source, that the classes are designed to welcome those who are often excluded or unsupported in their fitness journeys. 'This is labeled queer. You’re allowed to present however you are, and you will be seen exactly in that way,' she said. Yasinitsky added that the program's overall goal is to 'break' down boundaries and provide beginners with a 'safe space' to 'try something new.'Ri Scovel, a Queer Pole Fit instructor, emphasized to the outlet that by focusing on the 'queer' demographic, the course challenges the common pattern of pole classes being marketed towards 'ladies.' This expansion of the sport aims to reach a frequently ignored group while simultaneously offering a platform for a stigmatized form of dance. The university initiated these classes last January and continues to attract new participants, according to reports. Fox News Digital has reached out to Washington State University for further comment regarding the course but has not yet received a response
