The Washington Post faces an ironic situation with recent layoffs coinciding with its success in the 2026 Best of Photojournalism awards, as winners' employment status has changed due to the time gap between award eligibility and announcement. Several award-winning journalists, including McClain, Chikwendiu, Kirpalani, and Green, were impacted by staff reductions. Laid-off staff express both reflections on their work and optimism for future endeavors. Retired journalist Ken Klein is also mentioned.

Lee statue… ” Laid-off award winner Green expresses let’s-see-what-happens optimism: “They may have locked us out of the building and Slack but hard drives are forever,” she declared on Instagram.Ken Klein lives in Silver Spring, Maryland; he is retired after a career in politics, lobbying, and media including The Associated Press and Gannett in Florida.
