After months of anticipation, Washington, D.C. welcomes two new giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, to the National Zoo. The pandas arrived from China last October and have been settling into their newly renovated habitat on the Asia Trail.

Washington, D.C.'s panda drought came to an end on Friday as three-year-old giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao made their public debut at the National Zoo. The pandas arrived from China last October, touching down at Dulles International Airport. Following their arrival, they were placed in quarantine while the zoo meticulously prepared their new habitat on the Asia Trail.

The newly renovated space boasts an array of features designed to mimic their natural environment, including climbing structures, refreshing water features, intricate rockwork, a state-of-the-art ventilation system, secure fencing, and informative signage. This arrival marks the beginning of a new 10-year agreement between the National Zoo and Chinese authorities. The previous agreement expired in 2023, raising concerns among panda enthusiasts in America that Beijing might withdraw its furry ambassadors amidst growing diplomatic tensions. Pandas have held a special place in the nation's capital since 1972 when Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing were gifted by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai following President Richard Nixon's historic visit to China. While the specifics of the current agreement remain undisclosed, past arrangements involved an annual fee of $1 million per bear to the Chinese government. A common stipulation in these agreements is the return of cubs born in overseas zoos to China before they reach the age of four. Panda fans eager to celebrate the return of these beloved creatures can do so with the release of limited-edition Metro SmartTrip cards available at select stations, including Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, Metro Center, and L’Enfant Plaza. Additionally, the Zoo plans to relaunch the Giant Panda Cam following Bao Li and Qing Bao’s public debut, allowing viewers worldwide to observe these enchanting animals. Admission to the National Zoo is complimentary, but timed entry passes are required, which can be reserved online.Bao Li | 宝力 (pronounced BOW-lee)MaleBorn Aug. 4, 2021In Mandarin Chinese, 'Bao' means 'precious' and 'treasure'.
