The Smithsonian National Zoo is buzzing with excitement as it introduces its newest resident pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, to the public. Visitors can meet the adorable duo starting Friday, with special transportation options available via Metro. Bao Li, a 3-year-old male, is known for his outgoing personality, while Qing Bao, a 3-year-old female, is a bit more shy but equally charming. The zoo's Panda Cam will be live-streaming from 7 a.m., offering a glimpse into the pandas' playful antics.
The wait is over! The Smithsonian National Zoo’s newest giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, are set to make their public debut Friday, promising a day of “pandamonium” for visitors.Getting to the zooare available at five Metro stations, including Woodley Park and Cleveland Park, the two closest to the zoo. The other stops include Dupont Circle, Metro Center and L’Enfant Plaza.
Bao Li, a 3-year-old male panda, carries a legacy of Smithsonian panda royalty. His mother was born at the zoo, and his grandparents lived there for over two decades before leaving in 2023. In Mandarin, Bao Li’s name reflects his robust energy, with “Bao” meaning “precious” and “treasure,” and “Li” refers to “vitality” and “strength.” And together, Bao Li means "active and vital power."
Qing Bao, a 3-year-old female, is named for the lush greenery of panda habitats. “Qing” translates to “green” and “treasure,” while “Bao” reinforces her cherished status."Bao Li, who's our male, he's very outgoing. He's fun-loving. He loves to romp around and has a great time doing it," said Deputy Director Stephanie Brinley. "Qing Bao, is a little bit more shy, but certainly incredibly curious.
Some visitors came from across the country, like Lisa Barham from Ohio. Lisa and her child were one of the first people in line since 5 a.m.If you can’t make it in person, the zoo’s Panda Cam will be on starting at 7 a.m., and 40 cameras will capture every adorable moment of Bao Li and Qing Bao’s antics, giving you all the different angles of what the pandas are up to!
It's been roughly two decades since new pandas arrived in D.C., with former residents Mei Xiang, Tian Tian, and Xiao Qi Ji departing on, to China per an agreement between researchers in China and the U.S. The previous panda trio garnered millions of visitors to the National Zoo nationally and internationally over the years.
