In 1910, Huo Yuanjia died at the age of 42. While Chen Gongzhe, a historian and Yuanjia's student, believed that the cause of Yuanjia's death was hemoptysis, many speculated that he was poisoned by the Japanese. When Yuanjia's body was excavated years later in 1989, black spots were found on his pelvic bones, suggesting the presence of arsenic.
