The UK system requires trans people to provide a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, signed medical reports from two doctors and two years’ evidence of “living in the acquired gender”.
The process is so difficult that just one per cent of trans people in the UK actually hold a GRC, a document which enables them to marry as their true selves, and to die with their gender affirmed. We all deserve that dignity. As a lesbian, those rights are so important to me. I want that for all LGBT+ people.
Under the Senedd’s LGBTQ+ Action Plan for Wales, the Welsh government has called for a simplification of the process, and Holyrood recently made a similar move with. The trans young people we work with across the UK at Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity, tell us they desperately need reform to these barriers they face to being seen as their authentic selves.
At the same time, while Scotland and Wales make these strides, trans young people tell us that they fear they will be left behind in England and face increasing hostility from those in power and the public. The way the wider conversation about the Gender Recognition Act has played out in politics and the media has rarely been kind to some of our most vulnerable in society, and I think many will look back at this point in history with regret.
While Section 28 was specifically about one issue – prohibiting the “promotion of homosexuality” by local authorities – rather than making it illegal for LGBT+ people to be ourselves, that detail didn’t matter. The result was the same: a terrifying wave of fear was created that changed British societal views of LGBT+ people.
