As Aussies flock to their garden beds amid the warm temperatures and longer daylight hours of springtime, health authorities are warning of an increased risk of contracting a potentially deadly bacterial infection. Legionnaire’s disease is a severe form of pneumonia contracted by breathing in dust contaminated with legionella bacteria.
Older people, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of getting Legionnaire’s disease, and can experience more severe symptoms. “Up to 10 per cent of cases can be fatal,” the WA health department said. Legionnaire’s disease can feel similar to a severe flu, as symptoms include fever, chills, aching muscles and joints, a dry cough, often-severe headaches, tiredness, loss of appetite and shortness of breath.
