\The initiative, spearheaded by the nonprofit Creative Acts, provides inmates with immersive experiences through virtual reality headsets. Inmates can travel the world, from the bustling markets of Bangkok to the serene landscapes of Southeast Asia, via VR. The program extends beyond mere entertainment, encompassing scenarios like job interviews, designed to equip them with essential skills for the post-incarceration job market. The program is currently operating in several California prisons, including Valley State Prison, and is facilitated using donated Oculus headsets from Meta. It is also available to youth offenders. Creative Acts aims to expand the program throughout California and nationally. Experts, like Nancy La Vigne, the dean of Rutgers-Newark School of Criminal Justice, believe this technology could be instrumental in rehabilitation and reintegration, allowing individuals to practice essential life skills, like navigating the DMV or public transport, in a safe environment. Further, La Vigne points out that there can be a calming effect on inmates from using VR, based on research that suggests reduced aggression after viewing nature scenes. Richard Richard, a former inmate and now a volunteer for Creative Acts, highlights the transformative power of VR in facilitating mental and spiritual transcendence within the confines of prison. With the help of the program, inmates can now prepare to reenter society.
