Indiana lawmakers have reached a final $44.5, two-year budget deal, calling an end early Friday morning after hours of last-minute negotiations rounding out the 2023 legislative session.
The end result is a 10% increase in K-12 spending over the two-year budget ― roughly half a billion to fund the voucher expansion, and a billion-dollar increase for the rest of the schools in the state., allowing families of four with an annual income of $220,000 to use state dollars toward a private school education, proved the most contentious issue of the budget talks.
"This one is really hard to swallow," she said."I don’t have anything against Catholic schools; I just think people who make $200,000 a year can afford to pay for their child’s education. ... This is a budget that allows the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer."
