An event by Michael's Memory/PUSH Harrisburg drew about 75 volunteers, including dozens of children, to Allison Hill on Saturday.
About 75 people including dozens of children met at Reservoir Park and cleaned the streets of Harrisburg Saturday as part of a community event hosted by the group Michael’s Memory/PUSH Harrisburg.
said Tone Cook, CEO of Michael’s Memory. He said he hopes additional cleanups in the future will draw even more volunteers, who can get to know each other while improving the community. The cleanups are one small way to boost community spirit and show the youth they have adult support and positive role models they can turn to, Cook said. He has been organizing Stop the Violence events for years in memory of his brother Michael, who he said was accidentally shot and killed in Harrisburg in 1997.
Stopping the violence “takes a lot more than just going out there and telling people to get off their corners,” Cook said. “We’re trying to give the youth a sense of direction, clean up our own backyards.”
