No. 4 Southern took down No. 5 Williamstown in three sets for the South Jersey, Group 4 trophy.
Girls Volleyball: Williamstown is defeated by Southern 2-1 in the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 4 final on November 7, 2023There is no rivalry, relationship and respect between two girls volleyball programs quite like the one between Southern and Williamstown.
This match gave off the feel of a state championship. The crowd was packed into the bleachers, onlooking career-best games from what seemed to be from every player. “Once our servers go back there and go on their typical runs, we trust them to get the other team out of system. Liliana was amazing today. She kept her head clear when we were down and she also helped bring us back in the third set,” Hamlin said, who also notched 10 digs and an ace.
“That was the best game Emily’s ever had. To do it on this stage is phenomenal. We knew we would have to be big on defense and just tried to limit Williamstown’s bigger hits,” Maxwell added. She now has 17 matches this season with 20 or more assists and 1,737 total for her career. Instead of basking in another memorable individual performance, Regulski jumped for joy next to her teammates knowing just how hard they all worked to get to this point yet again.
Senior Jessica Smart led Southern with 13 kills, which is her 11th match this year with double-digit kills. She has 242 kills in 2023. Williamstown then carried a bit of a run that saw Gab Titus, who smashed nine kills, get hot at the net to force a third frame. Kara Gaskins also contributed on offense, totaling five kills.
“This year, we played 15 of the Top 20 teams. We faced 17 total if we count scrimmages, and today was the toughest one we have been in. As a coach, this was one of the best matches I was a part of.”
