Many individuals take supplements to address any deficiencies, but they are not a guaranteed protection against fractures.
Vitamin D and calcium supplements provide no 'net benefit' for fall or fracture prevention in older adults, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a panel of experts who analyzed all available scientific evidence on these supplements. 'This doesn't mean that vitamin D and calcium are not beneficial overall for bone health and other bodily functions,' says a task force member, also the chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Vitamin D aids your body in absorbing calcium, promoting strong bones and muscles. It also plays a role in supporting your immune system. Limited sun exposure during winter months can elevate the risk of deficiency. The National Academy of Medicine recommends adults consume 600 to 800 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily. In the absence of sun exposure, fortified foods like milk and yogurt can contribute to meeting daily requirements. However, in terms of their effectiveness in preventing fractures or falls, we did not find any conclusive evidence to support that,' Rao states. This finding aligns with the task force's prior conclusion, as further research has questioned the usefulness of supplements in preventing age-related bone fractures among post-menopausal women and men over 60. This recommendation does not apply to individuals with osteoporosis or those at high risk who may require alternative treatments such as prescription medication
