Virta Health's partnership with Blue Shield of California illuminates the potential of value-based care:
The Virta treatment works by getting participants onto a keto-based dietary system and enabling them to follow up on progress through digital support tools, including a smart scale and app that gives patients access to a health coach and an online community of other Virta treatment members.
Large-scale insurers are sensible partners for Virta, considering its value-based care model offers payers the potential to reduce care costs without assuming too much financial risk. In November 2018, Virta announced thatof fees for its diabetes program would be tied to whether or not patients achieved a predetermined engagement milestone — meaning that if the program fails to reduce patients' blood-sugar levels to within a certain range, Virta doesn't collect the full payment amount.
This allows payers to pursue an innovative treatment option without taking on nearly as much financial risk as they would under the fee-for-service model dominating healthcare payment revenue.
