Vince Vaughn traveled back in time, but now the cast of Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice get to look to the future. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is a new movie on Hulu, where Vaughn and James Marsden team up with actress Eiza González.
Their characters face the most dangerous night of their lives, and it's all made even more complicated with the introduction of a time machine. It's an R-rated action-comedy filled with Vaughn's typical banter and a ton of violence. The movie's writer and director, BenDavid Grabinski, spoke to Slashfilm about the movie. Viewers could wonder if there would be a sequel film, but Grabinski put a stop to the idea immediately. He said,"To me, it has to be self-contained, and I just ... I put everything into making the movie I wanted to make that did what I wanted it to do." The director went on to say he could wake up one day and change his mind, but he didn't want to go into the first film while thinking about a sequel and possibly"undercut what happens." Audiences might mistake the ending of the film as a cliffhanger — don't worry, there are no spoilers in this article — but Grabinski doesn't think many will. He said,"I think you see everything you need to see to know that somehow Mike is going to fix things. And you don't need to see him fixing things or how he does." There is an emotional closure to the movie, and Grabinski thinks that's enough. He reiterated that a sequel is not completely out of the question. If Grabinski woke up one day with an amazing idea for the sequel, he wouldn't throw it away. However, for the first film, he said,"I wasn't really thinking more than a foot in front of my face this entire time." This was mostly because of the difficult logistics that came into play while filming. The film took so much effort to coordinate because of Vaughn's character, Nick. The introduction of the time machine also introduced a second Nick character, as one was from the present and the other came from the future. Every time the two Nicks were in a scene together, a decision had to be made about which Nick, present or future, Vaughn would start as. Vaughn's stand-in had to take on the outfit and persona of the other character, and then once all the scenes with one Nick were filmed, it was time to switch and film from the other direction. The actor changes, outfit changes, and character switches are a recipe for a continuity nightmare on set, so it's no wonder Grabinski wanted to take the film one step at a time. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice has a respectable 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
