Victoria is grappling with a severe bushfire threat as a total fire ban is enforced due to soaring temperatures and strong winds. The situation is particularly critical in the Grampians National Park, where a major fire is raging and residents have been urged to evacuate.
A total fire ban is in place across Victoria , as high temperatures and strong winds are expected to create the worst conditions for bushfires seen in years. The atmosphere is pretty quiet at the moment here at the Ballarat ground, except for the noise of generators in the wind, Darling said.
Around 210 CFA volunteers across Victoria are expected to pass through here today on their way to fighting the fire in the Grampians,This area also served as a staging ground during the fires in Pomonal back in February, so sadly Western Victoria is getting used to responding to these kinds of disasters. With residents in communities near the Grampians National Park fire urged to leave, three relief centres have been set up nearby.Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron told ABC Melbourne radio that one of the BoM's station appears to have been destroyed by the Grampians fire.Looks like it went offline around 1.30am this morning and just prior to that we saw a spike in temperature. Mr Efron said temperatures in Victoria's west have ticked up into the low 30s, with winds now gusting up to 50kph.People in the area should stay alert, watch the conditions outside, and keep checking emergency updates. Unfortunately, emergency warnings are in place north of Dunkeld, and Watch and Act messages issued in Dunkeld proper. With winds expected to move the fire south, Dunkeld residents are being told to monitor conditions and be ready to act.Residents are being told that leaving immediately is the safest option, before conditions become too dangerous. The bushfire is travelling in a southerly direction towards Wannon River and is spotting into the North Boundary Road area.Incident controller Mark Gunning described the wind change as a 'bad cocktail' for firefighters attempting to suppress the fire in to stay alert and prepare for the worst, with conditions expected to change with the wind this afternoo
