A rapidly spreading bushfire south of the Grampians National Park has prompted urgent evacuations. Victorians in high-fire-risk areas face extreme conditions on Thursday with temperatures soaring to 40 degrees Celsius and winds reaching 100 km/h.
Residents of a town south of the Grampians have been ordered to take shelter as firefighters battle an out-of-control bushfire threatening their properties. VicEmergency warned those living in Bornes Hill and the North Boundary Road area, south of the Grampians National Park, that it was too late to leave their homes and that they should seek shelter from the fire.
Other Victorians in high-fire-risk areas have until 10am to flee their homes before Thursdays strong winds and scorching heat make evacuating too dangerous Temperatures are forecast to reach 40 degrees on Thursday, and winds are expected to reach speeds of 100km/h in some parts of Victoria. A total fire ban is in place for the entire state, and the fire danger rating is extreme for all Victorian regions except for East Gippsland. Firefighters expect the Grampians fire to spread in the worst bushfire conditions since Black Summer and fear other blazes could spark. On Wednesday evening, Grampians Incident Controller Peter West said Boxing Day would be hot with gusty northerly winds all day, and we expect to see it change at 5pm when they turn to the west. Avoid travel keep off the roads. The risk is right across the landscape in Victoria, said West. Don’t let curiosity get to you, and don’t enter the fire area it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for our firefighters. A severe weather warning for damaging winds is in place for parts of western Victoria. Authorities expect winds to reduce in force by late Thursday night. The SES is advising people to avoid travel if possible and to stay away from trees, fire-affected areas, windows, and fallen powerlines. Premier Jacinta Allan said on social media last night that more than 100 interstate firefighters were in Victoria to help firefighting efforts. Tomorrows conditions are expected to be the worst they’ve been since the 2019-20 Black Summer fire season, said Allan. If youre planning on travelling tomorrow reconside
