A temporary employee was arrested for hacking a co-worker to death at a construction site in North Charleston with a machete Wednesday afternoon.
Tyrone Clayton Campbell, 33, of Summerville is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime , according to the North Charleston Police Department .
“It was a very violent scene, and it isn't something that even we deal with every day. A machete is not a normal weapon that we see used in these types of instances,” said Deputy Chief Karen Cordray.According to the NCPD, the incident occurred just before 3 p.m. at a construction site at 3471 Trade Center Court off Palmetto Commerce Parkway. Campbell and the victim were temporary employees for an unidentified company.
After getting into an argument, Campbell was seen shoving the victim to the ground and hacking him with the machete, according to the NCPD. He then stood over the victim, swinging the machete around, before walking out and encountering the officers on the sidewalk. Police say when they confronted Campbell, he pulled the machete out of his bag and refused to drop it. The officers used a taser to subdue Campbell; he was arrested without further incident.
“I’m quite sure that it was very traumatic for anybody present at that scene. And so, certainly, we appreciate their cooperation and their willingness to help us today,” Cordray said.Police records show Campbell has been arrested at least nine times.reported that he was facing charges of arson and attempted murder after being accused of strangling his cellmate in the Orangeburg County Detention Center.
