San Antonio biotech hub VelocityTX is angling to build East Side hub for military medical research with the Defense Health Agency.
A $60 million center for medical innovation could be built near downtown as an offshoot of the military’s plans to consolidate its Defense Health Agency in San Antonio . The joint agency is studying the idea pitched by VelocityTX — the near- East Side biotech hub — for the research center that would anchor a bigger development that could eventually create more than 2,000 jobs along Center Street about a block from its growing campus.

Consideration of the idea comes as the Defense Health Agency, the massive bureaucracy that oversees healthcare for the Defense Department, is also working to consolidate more than 3,000 existing employees working at nearly two dozen sites across the city.

Sutton site across East Houston Street from VelocityTX’s campus that could eventually include as much as 600,000 square feet of office, retail and green space. VelocityTX estimates it could create 2,400 jobs.
Air Force confirms consideration of Port San Antonio’s bid to build, host new cyber headquarters The Air Force is considering the Port’s $1 billion proposal to relocate 16th Air Force from its current location on what’s known as “Security Hill” on JBSA-Lackland to a new campus on Port San Antonio. The Port’s plan calls for developing a new complex via an intergovernmental support agreement, an arrangement commonly used for municipalities to provide support services on military installations.
VelocityTX bioscience hub working to grow an Innovation District on the East Side After the agency was established in 2013, it gobbled up office space at locations across the city as it added functions and capabilities. The network office is already on Port San Antonio. Most employees are on Fort Sam Houston and others are in commercial office spaces like the Lincoln Center and the Bank of America Plaza.
