New York Liberty's championship point guard, Courtney Vandersloot, is set to leave the team and return to the Chicago Sky in free agency
The New York Liberty celebrated their historic first-ever championship in 2024, but their roster stability is facing a significant challenge. Veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot , a cornerstone of their championship run, is poised to enter free agency when the window opens on February 1st, and all indications point towards her departure from New York for the 2025 season.
Vandersloot is strongly anticipated to rejoin the Chicago Sky, the franchise where she spent the first twelve seasons of her illustrious career. During her time in Chicago, Vandersloot etched her name in the franchise's history, becoming the Sky's all-time leader in assists. After two impactful seasons with the Liberty, it appears she'll be returning to her roots in the Windy City. Earlier this month, Vandersloot candidly expressed her desire to play for a team that values her contributions. She stated, 'I want to be valued... I want to have the ball in my hands and be able to create the way that I can. And just be in a place that is comfortable for me and my family.' Chicago seems poised to fulfill several of those criteria. The organization drafted Vandersloot from Gonzaga with the third overall pick in 2011, and her return would allow her to reconnect with the city and reclaim her starting role with the Sky in 2025
