Drew Gittens says Americans have grown numb to school shootings. But the pain of the Ulvade tragedy hit the survivor of the 2012 shooting at Chardon High School differently.

A home on Chardon Avenue across the street from Chardon High School has a message written on the front window February 29, 2012 vowing never to forget the high school student victims that were shot in the high school cafeteria February 27 before the start of school. The Plain DealerCLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio –

He is still in close touch with high school friends in Chardon, though he says they rarely, if ever, talk about that day. “I have seen first-hand what these types of people, and what these weapons can do, and we need to make it harder for them to access weapons,” Gittins said. “The Chardon shooting would not have been prevented even if the gun reform measures we are still debating today had been in place because it was a legal firearm stolen from an intimate family member, but I do still believe it is necessary to make it harder to acquire a weapon, especially assault weapons.

Gittens was in his homeroom, down the hall from the cafeteria, when the gunfire erupted. He doesn’t remember hearing the gunshots – only becoming aware there was trouble when kids started running into the room to seek shelter, and his teacher locking things down.
