Six the 19 Robb Elementary School students killed on May 24 were playing Little League and another six had previously.
John Beauge | Special to PennLiveUvalde Little League president J.J. Suarez said he was “humbled” Saturday upon learning it is this year’s recipient of the Carl E. Stotz Little League Community Award.
“Often times in the wake of tragedy, Little League fields can become a place that bring back a sense of healing for a community and we hope the members of the league and the entire Uvalde community can find that comfort through the Uvalde Little League program.”The award was accepted by Rachel Lathe, the district administrator whose territory includes Uvalde.
“To allow the children to do what they love and proceed with our plans to host the tournament. It is our hope this event will provide an outlet for them to come together, release stress and support each other through play.”The rest of the baseball and softball seasons including championship games were canceled after the tragedy but the Uvalde teams that qualified for districts will play, he said.
“Being part of Little League is such a blessing,” Suarez said. “We belong to a bigger family than locally,” he said he told the players on the softball team he coaches.
