Lulu Zhang is UTSA’s first person chosen to lead a research project using the James Webb Space Telescope. He’ll study black holes to better understand galaxies.
A University of Texas at San Antonio post-doctoral fellow has been awarded precious time using the James Webb Space Telescope to gather data about supermassive black holes in hopes of better understanding how galaxies form and evolve. Lulu Zhang — a member of UTSA ’s physics and astronomy department and the university’s first person to be awarded time on the Webb telescope as a principal investigator for a research project — will get 12 hours of observation time on the $10 billion telescope.
He’ll focus on the interaction between hydrocarbons and active galactic nuclei around supermassive black holes — those with a mass more than 100,000 times that of the sun — at the heart of those galaxies. “This helps piece together our understanding of , how the central black hole can affect the whole galaxy. We get a better understanding of the evolution of galaxies,” Zhang said. “Exploring galaxies is enjoyable but not that easy.
