Tutehau Hunkin, who grew up in Provo, Utah, and now lives in Laie on Oahu, said he was asleep when floodwaters rushed into his neighborhood Friday morning. “My cousin woke me up around 1:30 in the morning, and he started yelling, saying it’s starting to flood,” Hunkin said.Jason Momoa and his family were forced to evacuate their home amid severe storms in O’ahuParts of Oahu received up to four inches of rain, triggering widespread flooding. At the height of the storm, first responders performed more than 200 life-saving rescues.“My cousin that actually has lived here for his whole life, and he said that this storm or this flood, he hasn’t seen anything like this in about 20 years," Hunkin said. As water filled neighborhoods, Hunkin and his family rushed to move belongings from the lower level of their home. They have since had to rip out the flooring due to damage.Some families across Oahu were forced to evacuate and later returned to find more than a foot of water inside their homes. Many are now shoveling mud and assessing damage. Since the flooding began Friday, Red Cross volunteers — including volunteers from Utah — have deployed to Hawaii, joining more than 100 disaster workers helping in impacted communities.Even as cleanup continues, he said residents are bracing for more rain. “I would say nerves are really high, but also hope — faith and hope — is really high as well,” Hunkin said. Hunkin said some in the community are frustrated and feel there was no proper warning ahead of the floods.
