WASHINGTON: A senior United States State Department official said Washington would 'oppose' any attempt to block US access to the South China Sea under the Code of Conduct being formulated to govern claimant countries in the disputed area. The Spratly islands in the SCS, believed to be rich in oil and mineral deposits, are being claimed in whole or in part by China, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines.
What we don't want to see is a Code of Conduct that will be used to exclude important regional partners,' Archibald said. The US Department of State official said the CoC 'would be important if it does lead to the international rules-based system that allows a free and open and prosperous Pacific.
