WASHINGTON D.C.: The United States government has offered to upgrade at least 12 of the 36 Sikorsky helicopters that the Philippines bought so that these can be used for disaster response, Philippine Ambassador to US Jose Manuel Romualdez said. The money to be used to acquire heavy-lift Sikorsky choppers will come from the $100 million military grant from the US government, he said on Tuesday.
The Polish-assembled helicopters will replace the $38-million Russian chopper deal that the previous Duterte administration canceled at the height of Russian invasion of Ukraine. The envoy noted that Russia will not provide maintenance for the Mi-17 Russian helicopters unlike the Sikorsky choppers from the US.'That's why some say some of these things may be considered expensive but at the end of the day it's cheaper because the maintenance is the key.
