Twenty-three years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States shocked the world and sparked America’s longest war in the Middle East, national security officials are still warning of more threats to the homeland to be on guard against.

“We kind of lost our innocence with 9/11 having the U.S. attacked directly in the single most catastrophic attack on U.S. soil in our history. That threat remains today, even though we have fought al Qaeda and ISIS for two decades,” said Mark Chandler, professor of practice at Coastal Carolina University’s department of intelligence and security studies and a former senior Defense Department executive.

“We’ve seen the threat from foreign terrorists rise to a whole other level after Oct.

U.S. Central Command warned in July that ISIS was on pace to more than double the attacks it committed this year compared to 2023. “The increase in attacks indicates ISIS is attempting to reconstitute following several years of decreased capability,” CENTCOM said in the statement. According to the last several releases of the national security strategy, China’s growing influence, deterring Russia and combatting other threats in cyber space have outpaced concerns about terrorism in the U.S.

While there are concerns about military conflict with China and Russia, the most pressing issue with both adversaries is through cyber warfare. The U.S. has taken steps to harden defenses for critical infrastructure like the power grid but those efforts are complicated by private companies operating things critical to everyday life that requires their own investments into securing them.
