The White House had resisted calls to supply missiles with a 190-mile range over escalation fears
The Biden adminstration has rejected Ukrainian requests for the Army Tactical Missile System , which have a range of around 190 miles, due to concerns over escalation as the missiles could be used to strike targets inside Russia. Russian officials have said long-range missiles are a “red line”., and the US could soon follow suit.. Another Biden adminstration source predicted that ATACMS would feature in an upcoming military aid package.
White House spokesman John Kirby said that no decision had been taken on the system from the G20 summit over the weekend but added “they are not off the table”., said talks were ongoing with the White House over Atacms and expressed confidence that “it will be agreed and very, very soon”. Ukraine has sought to increase its long-range capabilities in order to strike targets behind enemy lines such as command centres and logistics nodes in the hope of weakening Russian defensive lines and allowing a fitful counteroffensive in southern Ukraine to make territorial gains.
There is frustration in Kyiv over US reluctance to supply the tactical ballistic missiles and continued scepticism that their arrival is imminent.“Banking on a quick decision is risky given the previous intransigence of the Biden administration in the case of ATACMS,” said Mykola Bielieskov, advisor to Ukraine’s leadership through Kyiv’s National Institute for Strategic Studies.
Mr Bielieskov added that there are also doubts over the range of the missiles that could be supplied. International partners have previously sent export versions of weapons with shorter ranges than their maximum.that Ukraine has used to great effect, whereas the British and French missiles can only be fired from Ukraine’s modest fleet of Soviet-era fighter jets.
