A US defense firm announced a key milestone in counter-drone technology, having completed a proof-of-concept for a portable directed-energy laser platform.Designed to counter unmanned aerial threats, NUBURU ’s system uses non-kinetic directed-energy technology to disrupt or disable hostile drones.

The development comes as defense agencies worldwide accelerate efforts to counter the rapid spread of low-cost unmanned aircraft systems , which are increasingly reshaping modern battlefield and security environments. According to the firm, portable counter-UAV solutions, such as laser dazzlers, are seen as promising tools for protecting military forces and critical infrastructure.Directed energy defenseThe rapid spread of low-cost commercial and tactical drones has become one of the most disruptive trends in modern warfare, posing growing risks to military forces and critical infrastructure. Small unmanned aerial vehicles are increasingly capable of threatening frontline troops, armored vehicles, logistics convoys, border installations, airports, and other sensitive facilities. As a result, defense agencies worldwide are accelerating the development and procurement of counter-drone technologies, particularly portable systems that can rapidly neutralize UAV threats in real time.To address this challenge, Lyocon, a subsidiary of NUBURU, has developed a directed-energy counter-drone platform designed for rapid deployment in operational environments.The system employs a laser dazzler architecture that produces optical interference to disrupt drone sensors and visual navigation systems. By impairing onboard cameras and targeting optics, the platform offers a non-kinetic method of mitigating UAV threats without physically destroying the aircraft.Built around a compact semiconductor laser framework, the system integrates a multi-wavelength configuration operating across green, blue, and infrared laser bands. The directed-energy unit supports scalable optical output ranging from 1 to 10 watts, allowing operators to adjust power levels based on engagement requirements.Advanced beam-control features include adjustable divergence between 2.5 and 30 milliradians, precision collimation, and dynamic beam regulation to maintain targeting accuracy. The lightweight system is designed for rifle-mounted integration and compatibility with standard military small-arms platforms, enabling portable deployment in NATO-compliant operational environments.Drone defense technologyNUBURU views the early engagement as an important validation of the technology’s operational relevance and market interest. The platform’s modular architecture allows for rapid iteration and integration into broader counter-drone defense networks, potentially accelerating deployment compared with traditional defense development cycles.The development also marks NUBURU’s entry into the rapidly expanding counter-drone market. According to reports, the global counter-UAS sector could grow from about $6.6 billion in 2025 to more than $20 billion by 2030 as governments expand investments in technologies designed to neutralize emerging drone threats.“Lyocon’s portable directed-energy platform represents a highly adaptable non-kinetic C-UAV solution capable of protecting personnel, vehicles, and sensitive infrastructure from evolving UAV threats,” said Dario Barisoni, CEO of Nuburu Defense, in a statement. Alongside the successful proof-of-concept milestone, Lyocon has been conducting technical validation activities with a large government-owned defense electronics company, a major supplier of advanced military electronics in its domestic market. According to the firm, the engagement is part of a structured evaluation program to assess the operational viability of the company’s portable directed-energy counter-drone technology.Under the collaboration framework, prototype trials have been completed, while production-prototype testing has also been successfully finalized. The system has progressed through multiple stages of technical evaluation and validation, demonstrating its potential for operational use in counter-UAV missions.According to NUBURU, discussions have begun regarding potential procurement pathways, including the negotiation of a possible supply agreement. Any future deal would remain subject to technical qualification, regulatory approvals, and contractual negotiations.
