Princeton University engineers have developed 3D structures with 'adjustable flexibility.'
Drawing inspiration from ancient art forms – kirigami and origami – researchers have found a new way to create metamaterials. Artificially engineered, metamaterials possess unique characteristics not observed in naturally found materials. Interestingly, Princeton University engineers have created innovative 3D structures from a single piece of material by combining the art of paper cutting and folding. They have developed 3D structures with “adjustable flexibility.
The researchers state that this adaptability allows for structures that can be rigid in one direction and flexible in another. Moreover, their flexibility can be altered simply by twisting the structure, which changes its geometry.Geometric circuits The team can control how sound and light travel by carefully cutting and folding the paper, like creating special “geometric circuits” for them.
