The Board on Geographic Names, which operates within the Interior Department, is working expeditiously to update the names in the Geographic Names Information System, according to the Trump’s order affirms the Gulf of Mexico’s “central importance” to the U.S. by naming it the “Gulf of America,” according to the Interior Department. The directive recognizes the gulf’s “enduring contributions” to the “economic strength and vitality” of the country, the department explained.
