Investigators are looking for video and eyewitnesses to the fatal crash.
The Union County Prosecutor’s Office is looking for video from home surveillance cameras or dash cameras of the vehicle thatInvestigators are looking for any witnesses or video of the Jeep before or after the crash, authorities said.
Those submitting information to the prosecutor’s online and phone tips line are eligible for a reward of up to $10,000 if the tip results in an arrest and indictment. The two victims, who police have not identified yet, were struck on Burnside Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. and were airlifted to area hospitals, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. They were later pronounced dead. Members of the Cranford community planned a candlelight vigil Tuesday night on Burnside Avenue. The identity of the driver of the black Jeep that struck them has not been released. The driver was found shortly after the crash and taken into custody by officers from the Cranford and Garwood police departments on Monday evening.Cranford Station House, a local restaurant, said a member of their staff was a parent of one of the victims. “Today we mourn the tragic passing of two young girls, one of which was the daughter of our beloved employee, coworker and above all friend,” said the restaurant in a. “Our prayers and thoughts are with all that have been affected, in this very difficult time. As parents of four, we are deeply saddened and are at loss of words. We can only pray and hope that something like this never happens again.” “The Township of Cranford is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two young women in last night’s heartbreaking incident,” said the Cranford Township Committee in aSuperintendent Scott Rubin sent a letter to the Cranford Public Schools community on Monday, identifying the victims as students, and said a crisis team would be available to support students at each of the district’s schools. “Our Cranford community suffered a terrible tragedy this evening,” Rubin said. “While we respect the privacy of the families involved, we understand that this news will no doubt impact our school community. Please know that we are here to offer and provide comfort and support during this very difficult time. “Our thoughts are with all of you, and especially the families and closest friends of the students involved. Please look after one another throughout our Cranford community and share any strength you have with those who need it most,” Rubin added.
