Researchers at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, captured extraordinary footage of male koalas engaging in unusual behaviors. The video shows the koalas grooming each other, playing, smelling each other's genitals, and spending extended periods in close physical contact. This level of friendliness is highly atypical for koalas, who generally avoid each other and engage in aggressive interactions, often resulting in fights over females and serious injuries. Dr.
James Watchorn, the lead researcher, believes that the observed friendliness stems from overcrowding due to a population explosion at the Cape Otway colony in southern Victoria. Koalas were released there in the 1980s, but habitat fragmentation limited their dispersal. While the friendly interactions were initially fascinating, the footage also revealed a darker side of koala behavior. It depicted an unsuccessful mating attempt between a male and a female koala with a young joey that had recently emerged from its pouch. The joey climbed onto the male's back while its mother went up into the tree canopy, leaving the joey behind. This incident, while seemingly accidental, appeared to resemble the male stealing the joey. The joey then became annoying to the male, trying to move to its usual position on the mother's shoulder. Finally, the male grabbed the joey, bit it, and forced it out of the tree, causing the joey to fall seven meters to the ground. Realizing the joey was in danger, Watchorn intervened, rescuing the joey and reuniting it with its mother. Months later, the joey was observed to be healthy and thriving
