A University of Georgia student was critically injured in a vehicle attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, suspected to be an act of terrorism. The suspect, who was killed by police, is believed to have acted with others.

University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead said in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that one of the people who were critically injured in the attack was a student at the school and is receiving medical treatment. Morehead said he had spoken to the student’s family and offered condolences for the community. “I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who moved so quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical personnel who are caring for the injured,” Morehead said. Tens of thousands of fans had also traveled to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, where Georgia was slated to play Notre Dame on Wednesday night. Theauthorities have not released much information about what led up to the attack, but said the suspect is not believed to have acted alone and that they found an Islamic State flag in the vehicle.
