The University of Alaska system faces a 41% budget cut. Why that is devastating to education, science, and society.

quantified several variables to arrive at a conservative estimate of the university’s economic impact. The economic benefits of the university’s teaching mission were calculated by assessing the increased earnings that graduates of the university’s schools and colleges receive.

The analysis also considered the impact of increased productivity from cooperative extension efforts, Public Service and Outreach units, student service learning activities, and the number of small businesses emerging from university efforts. Universities in Alaska certainly take on similar roles. According to a presentation from the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation's Alaska Common Ground meeting :Alaska businesses rely on local talent from University of Alaska for their workforce needs as studies show that 68% of two-year graduates and 42% of four-year graduates remain in the state. It is clear that a 41% cut places all of these things at risk.
