United Airlines is changing the way flyers travel with its new couch-like seats. Starting in 2027, passengers who are looking to fly economy on “long-haul” trips can purchase a set of United Economy seats that transform into a lounge after takeoff, the airline announced in a press release March 24.

Introduced as the “United Relax Row,” it comes with three seats that the airline said are ideal for travelers who want more space, like families with small children or couples. The row of seats come “with individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle,” the press release said. Customers who purchase the new seats will also receive “a custom-fitted mattress pad, specially sized blankets, extra pillows and a stuffed plush for children,” as well as a kids travel kit for families. The United Relax Row is exclusive to North America and is expected to be available on more than 200 Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 widebody aircrafts by 2030, totaling up to 12 rows per plane, United said. The company also said it is the first North American airline to offer these types of seats. The new row of seats will be added in between the United Economy and United Premium Plus sections. Pricing will be released at a later date. Speaking about the update, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said in the press release, “Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them.” United also shared a clip on X of what customers can expect the seats to look like and the different ways the space can be used. Beneath the post, one user replied, “Can’t wait to try.” The airline responded, “Game-changer!” with a raising-hands emoji. When others inquired about how to book the seats, including if they are pet friendly, the airline said more details will be available closer to launch date.
