Another round of layoffs is hitting the Parma General Motors plant effective Wednesday.
“They can pay their executives, they can pay their shareholders, their stockholders, but they can’t pay the people who get them there,” said Local 1005 president Dan Schwartz. “Unfortunately, we have to do what we have to do; our members are more dug in now than they were before.”
Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter confirmed Tuesday that 139 workers will face layoffs Wednesday, reaching a total of 269 in the last month.“We have said repeatedly that nobody wins in a strike, and this is yet another demonstration of that fact. We will continue to bargain in good faith with the union to reach an agreement as quickly as possible,” General Motors said in a statement earlier this month.
“The biggest frustration is when these companies come out and say, you know, they don’t have the funds or they don’t have the monies, it’s ridiculous,” said Schwartz. “You’ve seen their earnings yesterday that General Motors released, what $3.1 billion, 7% above what they were.” Schwartz adds despite the layoffs, the union is committed to standing together and staying strong as the UAW pushes for a new contract.
Because union members worked without a contract up to the layoffs, they will receive strike pay going forward.
