That Supreme Court ruling has left Alabama elections leaders optimistic about their chances in court.
Back in September, the Department of Justice sued the state, alleging that Secretary of State Wes Allen violated the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.
Allen was looking to remove people identified as non-citizens from the rolls, but the federal law prohibits states from removing voters within 90 days of an election. That law is in place to protect voters from being removed by mistake, without giving them time to get back on the list. After the purge was announced, it took only a couple days for one Madison County man to reach out to us, saying he was notified he was going to be purged from voter rolls, despite being a citizen.
But on Wednesday the Supreme Court sided with Virginia in a similar case, giving that state approval to purge about 1,600 voters. Alabama’s list has twice that many.He stopped short of celebration saying it was too early to say what could happen with their case.Watch the latest WAFF 48 news, sports & weather videos on our YouTube channel!
