The head of the United Nations says fossil fuel companies – “the godfathers of climate chaos” – must be stopped from shameless greenwashing.

Fossil fuel advertising must be outlawed just as tobacco promotion was banned half a century ago according to United Nations chief António Guterres while accusing the industry of misleading the public and hiding the impacts of coal, gas and oil pollution on human life.

“Many in the fossil fuel industry have shamelessly greenwashed, even as they have sought to delay climate action, with lobbying, legal threats, and massive ad campaigns,” Guterres said in a speech to mark World Environment Day on Wednesday.“Climate change is the mother of all stealth taxes paid by everyday people and vulnerable countries and communities.

“If you breathe in air with particles and you’re already at high risk of a heart attack … it can tip the balance and cause you to have a heart attack.” “People used to smoke in hospitals, once people used to smoke on planes and now that’s considered laughable. We have the same situation where we have these extreme health concerns and our governments need to stop fossil fuel companies peddling their dangerous products,” Wylie said.

Australian Energy Producers, which represents the oil and gas industry, said fossil fuels would be needed throughout the energy transition to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
