Markarova appeared on The Katie Phang Show Saturday to address the conflict between Hamas and Israel. Host Johnathan Capehart asked the ambassador if Ukraine's neighbors could distract from its own war with Russia."I don’t see it as a diversion because we are dealing with the same axis of evil here," Markarova said."All countries that fight for their freedom, for their dignity, against horrific terrorist attack count on U.S. leadership in that.
She went on to point out that Saturday was the 596th day since Russia began its invasion and attack on Ukraine. "So, we need the United States to help us in this not only because it is important for Ukraine but also because it is important for national security of everyone who believes in the same values and for the U.S.,” Markarova said.
Most recently, the House passed a bill late last month that would provide Ukraine with $300 million in aid in addition to the cluster munitions promised earlier that month. The funding has split the Republican representatives, as 100 of the 221 voted for the measure.At least 9,614 civilians have been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, while another 17,535 have been injured, per data from the United Nations last month.
A week ago, on Simchat Torah, a Jewish holiday celebrating the annual cycle of the Torah scroll reading, Hamas fired thousands of rockets and also sent dozens of fighters into Israel. In light of the conflict between Hamas and Israel, some 2,900 have died, among them 27 American citizens. There are also more likely to be among the 150 taken hostage.
