Things are pretty hot in Manchester at the moment - with a temperature of 33.7C currently recorded at the University of Manchester's Whitworth Observatory.By 3pm, the highest recorded temperature was 37.5C at Kew Gardens in west London, according to the Met Office.

Cavendish in Suffolk had reached 37.4C, Santon Downham in Suffolk was 37.2C and Wisley, Surrey, saw temperatures of 37.2C.Falinge Park High School in Rochdale closed its doors early today, at 12.30pm. Pupis will return tomorrow morning until 12pm, with lessons moving online in the afternoon today and tomorrow.

Headteacher Miss Allen wrote to parents today, saying temperatures reached 33.8C in some classrooms by 9.30am, while temperatures continued to rise later in the morning. "I went round this morning and made sure we were ventilating as well as we could," she wrote. "I don't believe it is appropriate for children and staff to work in this condition, sat close to each other and trying to learn.

"In other countries with this heat, schools are air-conditioed and they close over the afternoon. It isn't about being 'soft' or not wanting to be in school, it is about whether compelling learning can actually take place and the health impact on your children that you entrust in our care."Stephen ToppingI have arrived at Cockfields Farm Park in Ashton-Under-Lyne but my visit will go no further as they have decided to close early because of the heat.
