Professor Chris Whitty says it will be a ‘marathon not a sprint’

New measures put in place to protect the public from theProfessor Chris Whitty said during a Downing Street conference on Monday that the country needs to be prepared for restrictions to be in place for a ‘prolonged period’ and it will be a ‘marathon not a sprint’.

‘It’s really important people realise they are in for the long haul on this. But this is really important, if we are to defend the ability of the NHS to treat people, if we are actually to minimise mortality, we have got to see this as a long game.’Officials said we are just a couple of weeks behind Italy in terms of confirmed casesagainst the quickly spreading pandemic, which includes telling the nation to stop all but essential contact.

He said: ‘A significant number of other deaths, which if the NHS became overwhelmed in any of the four nations if the intensive care units got to the point when they were overwhelmed, then people would die from indirect deaths because they did not have the ability to get medical care.
