UIW’s Lindsey Scott, Taylor Grimes drafted by USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers
University of Incarnate Word receiver Taylor Grimes runs into the end zone unchallenged against Faulkner during the first half on Saturday, Oct 22, 2022.Former Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 USFL College Draft on Tuesday by the Pittsburgh Maulers, who also added one of his top targets from the Cardinals by taking wideout Taylor Grimes in the seventh round.
In his lone season with the Cardinals as a transfer from Nicholls, Scott won the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the FCS, leading UIW to the program’s best season with a 12-2 record and a run to the FCS semifinals. Scott set FCS records with 60 passing touchdowns, 71 combined rushing and passing touchdowns and 10.32 yards per pass attempt, throwing for 4,686 yards while adding 712 rushing yards and 11 scores.
Already 24 years old and lacking prototypical NFL size at 5-foot-11, Scott elected to join the USFL, which holds a 10-game season from April through June. Grimes, 5-foot-11, led UIW in receptions in both seasons on campus as a transfer from Illinois State. After making 87 catches for 1,145 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2021, he hauled in 83 passes for 1,221 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.
