Seven hours before the marathon kicked off, around 400 students and residents in Nyaka, Uganda, competed for prizes and fun.
, a nonprofit that educates, empowers, and transforms vulnerable and impoverished communities in Uganda, ensuring that everyone has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive. Kaguri created the program 18 years ago, after he graduated from Columbia University in New York City and returned home to care his nieces and nephews, after his sister and brother had both died.
“In my village, kids don’t go to school because they don’t have pencils or other products, or, like my brother, he did not go to school and got married young,” Kaguri told. “We want to educate as many children and empower them to become doctors, lawyers, drivers, construction workers, cooks, teachers, social workers, and other things that can help their communities.”In 2001, Kaguri took the money he had saved and opened two schools in his home of Nyaka, Uganda.
“The kids are better off with an adult,” Kaguri said. “They have someone to love them and care for them.”Eighteen years after opening the first two schools, Kaguri recently opened up a third school in the region. The program now has about 10,000 women as “grandmothers” who are looking after around 60,000 children.
