By extending orientation and increasing student engagement UAF hopes to help improve student outcomes.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - As universities learn more about improving student outcomes, some are finding that increased student engagement can boost academic success. One way this is being implemented at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is by extending orientation.
Orientation is common tool used by universities to help navigate these changes, but it tends to only last from a few days to about a week. Some students say this is too short and colleges are making changes to address that. “For the fall class of 2024 we have a very different kind of orientation than UAF has run before,” said Josh Hovis, the Wood Center for student engagement director.
This will include checking in on new students as the semester progresses as well as getting them engaged in events and activities such as a “float party” according to Hovis. That will include a sort of palooza in the Patty center pool. Another aspect of the extension is improving student success. “As weird as it might sound, when a student is engaged and involved in something outside the classroom, they are more likely to graduate and they are more likely to make it from semester to semester,” said Hovis.
